Lake Johnson, Raleigh, NC: Travel Photography

Sometimes you just need to get away, find some stillness, pack a picnic lunch and BE. For those visiting the triangle area, Lake Johnson is a lovely, calm place to connect with nature and enjoy a quick stroll whether you're alone or with a significant other.

So Stephen and I packed up our lovely picnic basket and checked it out for a spell! Though you would think a place like this might be better to visit in the summer, I've found autumn is actually perfect for visiting. It's still warm, but the bugs aren't quite as heavy, a light breeze still hits you and you can opt-in or out on a sweater for whatever makes you feel most comfortable.

Now, to be honest, if it's a beautiful day, parking by the main pavilion can be kind of a hassle. However, there are plenty of lots nearby if you're okay with a little side jaunt out to Athens High School just up the road. It may add five to ten minutes to your walk, but all the better for increasing your appetite, am I right?

At the pavilion (during business hours) you can rent canoes and kayaks, purchase sweeties, or find some shade. There's also restrooms, shelters, and a few picnic benches for your pre-trek feasting. Though Stephen and I focused mainly on the path, we have really enjoyed the boardwalk and there was even a wedding reception there once! While sitting down to a snack, don't be surprised if you find a friend or two. Stephen and I met a squirrel when a strawberry fell from our fruit basket. He was happy to oblige in clean-up (though we don't recommend feeding all the animals, since the rangers don't seem to like that as much). We also found not just one but three turtles sunbathing on a log in the lake and some ducks too!
