The Weed Family's Urban Photo Session

Writer's picture: Delaney TaylorDelaney Taylor

When I host a photo session, I really hope to capture something real; something that reminds a person of their path in life and the way it was, if only for a day, or an hour, or a moment. When you're a kid, the dichotomy of work and play dominates a significant part of your reality--the constant flux of enjoying your discovery of the world around you and cementing real skills to further that enjoyment into your adult life as you continue learning. I knew when I first met the Weed family that this was a significant focus in their lives. Janet, a Montessori School goddess, taught me "Play is the work of the child." And so that became a huge theme in our shoot. As we played around the steps and nooks and brick edifaces of the Cary Arts Academy, I wanted to know these kids and their work.

As adults, when we meet we often ask "What do you do for a living?" These kids had a business of doing--they are living, and that's their work. That's the essence of play--life. And for today, this is what they do. Thanks for "working" with me, Weed family.
