As a photographer, you're present for some of life’s most memorable moments. Through your lens, you experience a piece of what your clients feel when they get engaged, during their wedding, or when they welcome a new baby. You come to care about them and their lives. So it means that much more when you're there to see all three.
Two years ago, I first photographed Wendy and Robert’s engagement photos in the freezing cold on Valentine’s Day; this session, Robert aptly observed, was the polar opposite. The humidity was near 80% and the heat index had been 98 degrees most of the day. All the same, Boxerwood Gardens offered us some respite in the golden shade as the sun started to set. As I said, it had been years since I had seen the MacEwans, so I was happy-anxious about seeing them again and taking their photos (I get extra measure of determination and nerves when my old friends return, because I desperately want to deliver even better photos than before).
But perhaps, what I was most excited about was meeting them as a budding family for the first time. While across the states, Robert and Wendy had a beautiful baby girl I’d heard a lot about (thank you social media), and let me tell you, her wonder and charm did not disappoint. Her curious, big, blue eyes widened as her parents took her out of the car. She immediately wandered from place to place, avid to explore. “This is normal for Weezy,” Wendy said. Two of my favorite moments were when she started to pull her Dad by his one finger and when, atop his shoulders, she dipped in on the action while her parents leaned in for a kiss, giving all of us the giggles.
In short, meeting Weezy was a little dream come true; however, seeing how happy her parents were—more so even than on their wedding day —warmed my whole heart. Give me 10 degrees or 90 degrees or somewhere in between (I know we’d both life that ;) ), but MacEwan family, I’ll meet you under any tree again to be taking photos of these precious moments in your lives.
